Microsoft. The world's first large-scale software company. This year alone, Microsoft has made billions of dollars off of its consumer software products. Why? Because Microsoft programs are well written, well advertised, and easily available. However, it is not the only software company out there, and many others produce programs worthy of the computing masses. Sometimes we forget they are there. Microsoft certainly hasn't.
From the beginning, Microsoft has ripped off technology from other companies. In fact, that was how it started out. When Bill Gates ripped off the wonderful new DOS operating system from IBM, his place of work, the Microsoft we all have learned to love was born. DOS was changed a little bit and suddenly, MS-DOS version 1.0 was out on the software market.
People instantly loved the wonderful MS-DOS. In a time period when all software was written for business mainframes by private programmers, it offered wonderful freedom. Soon, personal computers running MS-DOS appeared everywhere. Software programs designed for MS-DOS (written, of course, by Microsoft) appeared. Microsoft had successfully created a monopoly in the field of computer software.
Today operating systems continue to be created by Microsoft. The newest, Windows 95, has a whole slew of "Specially designed for Windows 95" software.
However, it seems that operating systems weren't a large enough domain for Microsoft. In the beginning of '96, Microsoft came out with Internet Explorer v1.0. At first, this seemed like a joke. There was no way that the fledgeling IE 1 could ever compete with the then current champion, Netscape Navigator. It had too many bugs, was not user friendly enough, and not easy enough to obtain.
But Microsoft carried on, creating the Microsoft Network, which used the new Internet Explorer. Since this came with later versions of Windows 95, many people signed on to the network for its ease of use. Then IE was offered for free and soon, IE began competing with Netscape Navigator.
Now, it seems that Microsoft is taking over the internet. Everywhere you look, you see the "get internet explorer" buttons. Microsoft has even taken over Java from Sun microsystems and created their own JSCRIPT which, of course, only works with Internet Explorer. It seems that there is no stopping Microsoft's continuing expansion. Before we know it, Microsoft software will be the only software, and Internet Explorer will be the only browser. In one of the freest mediums in the world, the Internet, our freedom of choice is being stripped from us. Now what will we do? I don't know, but I know where I would hate to go today.
